Alpha Coordinator: Alan Gray

‘Christianity - Boring, Irrelevant, Untrue!’. This is the title of the first video shown at the commencement of an Alpha Course, which, incidentaIly, follows a lovely meal prepared by church volunteers.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating (and I don’t just mean the Alpha Supper!) and during the past 6 years, over 200 people have attended Alpha Courses at St Michael’s with many, many folk coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.

Although Alpha is mainly for seekers, it is also applicable to Christians as it gives them the true facts about Christianity, challenges people about their beliefs and faith and helps them articulate to others their relationship God.

I believe one of the strengths of Alpha is that it allows people to explore all the different aspects of the Christian faith in informal groups where, after watching a video presentation by Revd Nicky Gumbel, they are free to ask any questions or express their opinion without feeling intimidated.

It is also an opportunity to make new and lasting friends. We usually meet on Wednesdays with one Saturday put aside for an ‘away day’ for teaching on the Holy Spirit and this can often be a turning point in people’s lives.

Courses are usually run twice a year: January to Easter and September to Christmas.  (Stop press: Another Alpha Course will be running after Easter, on Wednesday evenings at the Kings Way Café, from 16 April)
